Chapter 38: Crushing the Crime Syndicate in the Slums

After a short nap, Ryu decided to head deeper into the slums after checking on the church.

His goal was to destroy the criminal organization, Four Night Butterflies, who were trying to expand their territory into Border Town by instigating Kengo and his friends.

Initially, Ryu thought he could handle the situation by simply showing his strength and threatening them to back off. However, after hearing from Kengo that they planned to destroy the church too, he realized he couldn't be lenient. They were a criminal organization, and there was no problem in eliminating them.

Ryu was an adventurer. He often went outside the city and would eventually go on long journeys. The possibility of the children at the church being targeted in his absence was a real concern.

Therefore, he had to completely eliminate them. Especially the connection between the security force responsible for maintaining order and the criminal organization needed to be severed.

The Four Night Butterflies were a "radical" group among the three criminal organizations in the slums, known for their violent methods. They expanded their territory by intimidating people with threats of brutal consequences.

As their name suggests, the Four Night Butterflies had four leaders, with a single boss at the top. The boss had united four previously rivaling mid-level groups, forming a single organization.

All four leaders were renowned for their fighting abilities, feared inside and outside as the "Four Heavenly Kings."

Ryu arrived at the building housing the Four Night Butterflies' hideout and boldly stormed in through the front entrance.

Naturally, there were numerous members of the organization inside who tried to stop him, but they all quickly lost consciousness. Ryu, using his God's Eye, had identified the building's structure and the positions of the individuals. He then cut off their carotid arteries with microscopic dimensional barriers.

While they wouldn't die if their breath was cut off for 2-3 minutes, their brains would be deprived of blood, causing them to lose consciousness within a few seconds to a few dozen seconds.

They would be fine if it lasted for 1-2 minutes, but if it went on for 5 minutes, the survival rate would drop to 25%, and they could suffer permanent disabilities even if they recovered. If the blood flow to the brain was cut off for longer than that, they would certainly die.

When the blood flow to their brains stopped, they would lose consciousness without experiencing any pain. Their vision would simply fade away, and they would slip into unconsciousness like falling asleep. In other words, if Ryu left them like that, they would all die without realizing they had been killed.

This could be considered the easiest death as they would die without suffering.

The organization members simply fainted as Ryu approached.

He climbed the stairs of the dilapidated three-story building, heading towards the third floor. He knew that five people were there.

The moment he opened the door to the third floor, a knife flew towards him.

However, Ryu possessed a future-predicting ability that specialized in anticipating future danger. Naturally, he foresaw the knife attack. He could have simply avoided it as he already knew it was coming, but just to be sure, he slowed down the flow of time to one-hundredth its normal speed.

He slowly grabbed the handle of the flying knife. The blade could have been poisoned, so he made sure to grip the handle. Then, Ryu threw the knife back in the direction it had come from.

He wanted to make it look cool by sticking it into the wall, but he had never thrown a knife before, so the knife flew spinning, hitting the wall sideways and falling to the ground.

Slightly embarrassed, Ryu vowed to practice knife throwing next time.

"Not bad," said a man to Ryu's left.

"It's been a while since someone survived Ruby's knife," said another man to his right, with a smirk.

"You always throw a knife at anyone who enters this room? That's quite rough," said the man on the far right.

"Well, it's the standard treatment for someone who enters a room off-limits to anyone except executives without even knocking."

Ryu: "Let me tell you, I'll kill anyone who attacks me with malicious intent. I'm letting you off this time for the knife incident. Be careful next time."

Ryu continued forward. There was one man sitting at a luxurious desk in the back, and three men and one woman standing in front of him. The man in the back was probably the boss, and the four in front were likely the Four Heavenly Kings.

The man on the left said, "You have guts coming into the Four Night Butterflies' hideout alone. What happened to the guys downstairs?"

"I put them all to sleep. They'll be dying soon. Should I revive them for their sake?"

Downstairs, the blood flow to the brains of the men who had collapsed began to return, and they gradually regained consciousness. However, they couldn't understand what had happened or why they were lying on the floor.

"Depending on your answers, everyone downstairs will die too," Ryu said.

The man in the back (presumably the boss) said, "Who are you? What do you want?"

Ryu: "I'm here to crush you. I just want to confirm. Is it true that you are trying to expand your territory into Border Town?"

Boss: "Who told you that?"

Ryu: "Kengo."

Man on the left: "That idiot… It was their own initiative. It wasn't our order."

Ryu: "You have no such intentions?"

Man on the right: "We don't exactly… The territories within the slums are at a stalemate, you know. We have to expand outwards."

Ryu: "So, you plan to destroy the church and the orphanage?"

Man on the left: "Did he say that? Ah, yeah, if it becomes our territory, we don't need that stuff, you know?"

Ryu: "Give up on expanding your territory. If you promise not to touch the church and its surroundings, I'll let you live."

Man on the right and back: "Woah, you're bold. I like it."

Boss: "What if we say we can't promise?"

Ryu: "I told you, everyone dies."

Boss: "You're scary. You seem to be really attached to that church. Are you an orphan from that orphanage?"

Ryu: "I just owe the sister a debt of gratitude."

Man on the left: "That's touching! You came here alone to repay that debt?"

Boss: "You seem to have a lot of confidence in your skills, but you're just a kid's errand boy. There are things in this world that you can't do alone. We have many allies. While you're here, we could kidnap those orphans and use them as hostages."

Ryu: "So that's how it is... Guess I'll have to kill everyone after all."

"Don't underestimate us!"

The four attacked.

The man on the left wielded a short sword, the man on the right used a javelin, the woman on the left and back threw a knife, and the man on the right and back began to chant a spell.

Foolish fools, thought Ryu.

In the next instant, their four heads were severed by dimensional slashes.

"I warned you."

The boss stood up in a panic, but his head rolled off the table.

Those downstairs also lost consciousness again, their brains deprived of blood until they died.

That day, the Four Night Butterflies, one of the three major criminal organizations in the slums, quietly disappeared…

Now, there was one more task for the boss of the Four Night Butterflies.

Ryu grabbed the boss's head rolling on the desk and called out.

"Hey, you bribed Bolt from the security force, right? Stop pretending to be dead, you're still alive. Answer me."

The boss seemed to be in a panic. It was only natural for him to think he was dead since his head was separated from his body, and he was looking up at his own body from the table.

But in reality, Ryu had cut their connection but not severed the space. He had connected the head and body in a sub-space.

The boss, initially panicking, gradually realized he wasn't dead and calmed down.

"I'll reattach your head if you cooperate. Go to the security force and testify about your bribery of Bolt. Confess everything else you've done, without any omissions. Got it?"

"Y, yes… I'll testify, I'll confess, so please put my head back…"

Thinking calmly, he would eventually be beheaded and lose his head if he confessed to all his crimes. However, he was panicking and couldn't think clearly.

It was probably that he had no choice, as he didn't know what would happen if he refused.

Maybe being alive but having your head separated from your body was unbearable mentally, even if you were going to die anyway.

Ryu teleported the boss to the headquarters of the third security force where Golan was, still holding the boss's head under his arm. The body was lying down as it couldn't stand without its head, losing its balance.

He could have spoken with just the head, but the reaction of those who saw it was too intense, so he put the head on the body and wrapped it with cloth to secure it. The head was just resting on top, so if the body leaned forward, the head would roll off, and it needed to be careful. In the beginning, the head rolled off several times, causing several people to faint.

Perhaps the boss hated being separated from his body so much that he honestly confessed about the bribery and other crimes.

Once Golan confirmed the testimony, he reattached the boss's head and left the rest to the security force.

Ryu returned home, and Dag rushed from the church, looking flustered.

The security force had arrived at the church and were looking for Ryu. Dag had come to warn him not to go to the church, but Ryu told him it was okay and headed towards the church.
