(I see, graduation is at the whim of this instructor, Iraira. Someone said yesterday that if she doesn't like you, you won't graduate, even if you're good. The receptionist said that the guild master wouldn't hold back promotions out of spite, but...the guild master might be fine, but the instructors are problematic...)
Another instructor stepped forward and began speaking. It was Ash, the one Ryu had met yesterday.
"I'm Ash, Iraira's assistant. Nice to meet you all.
Iraira said that you won't graduate unless she says so, but that's not because she's bullying or picking on you. It's because she doesn't want you to die by pushing yourselves too hard before you're strong enough. I hope you understand.
In other towns, they easily let you register as an adventurer and there's no training. But many beginner adventurers get killed by monsters right away after becoming adventurers that way.
Do you know what the probability of newbie adventurers dying within a year was in this town?
It was over 60%, almost 70%...
But this training started five years ago, and none of the graduates have died. That's a 100% five-year survival rate, isn't that amazing?
We're going to do everything we can to support you so that you can survive as an adventurer and thrive for a long time. Let's do our best!"
"O-o!" The trainees cheered.
There were a lot of trainees because many couldn't graduate, but it seemed their motivation was surprisingly high. Everyone seemed to be serious about gaining real skills.
...Those who weren't serious probably dropped out already.
Ryu found out later that this training was nicknamed the "Iraira Boot Camp" in town, and some of the trainees were even former adventurers from other towns who had come to this training to hone their skills.
"Alright, the six of you who joined today, come forward!"
Ryu and five others stepped forward.
"The first thing you need to learn in this training...
...is how to humble arrogant trainees."
Iraira looked very irritated.
"Most people who want to become adventurers think they're skilled. But those who think they're skilled are the ones who die the quickest."
Iraira continued, looking at Ryu.
"And those who say they're experienced. They think they're amazing because they've been doing this for a while, but they're complacent. They meet a slightly strong monster and get killed right away. Hey, Ryujeen was it? I'm talking about you!"
Ryu involuntarily shrugged.
But that gesture provoked Iraira's ire.
"Yesterday, you seemed to be showing off your strength, but it seems we need to break your nose first."
Iraira must have heard about what happened later, as she only saw Ryu getting punched yesterday.
"Newbies, you're going to have mock battles with veteran adventurers to measure your current strength. First, Ryujeen, you go."
