Despite his intentions, Yorm's attack was stopped. Ryu didn't dodge up, down, or back, but instead stepped forward. He swiftly moved, grabbed Yorm's wrist, and halted his attack.
From the beginning, Ryu had seen through Yorm's plan. Reading minds, like predicting the future, was part of his "Divine Eye" ability, given to him when he was reincarnated.
Combining his ability to read minds and predict the near future, Ryu effortlessly dodged every attack. The moment Yorm was grabbed, the images of Arthur and the others being slammed to the ground flashed through his mind.
"Don't let him grab me!"
Yorm panicked and jumped back. Ryu didn't intend to throw him this time, though, and easily released his grip.
They faced each other, a distance now separating them. Stopping Yorm's rapid strikes by grabbing his wrist, Ryu showcased his masterful martial arts. What would have happened if he had followed up with another attack?
Clearly, Ryu wasn't just strong. He was truly skilled. Yorm, cornered, had to resort to his final trump card.
He feigned a sword attack, but instead launched a magical assault. Closing in meant being grabbed. A ranged attack was his only option.
... But that would just make him a regular magic user.
Fireballs flew towards Ryu, but he read the attack and moved out of their path, easily dodging them. Yorm fired multiple fireballs, but Ryu dodged them all.
"What is this? Why are they missing...?"
Ryu stood motionless, facing Yorm.
"Is this the end? It's fine if I attack now, right?"
Ryu hadn't attacked once yet.
Fear gripped Yorm, sweat pouring down his face. He opted to use a spell he rarely used to conserve his magic - a wide-range fire spell. And it was the right choice.
While he could predict the range attack, there was nowhere to escape. He couldn't stop it like he did the sword attacks.
If it were a spell with a chant, Ryu could have stopped it while Yorm was chanting. But Yorm's magic sword activated without any chant.
Though a special form of magic, it was incredibly rare in this world to be able to use magic without a chant. A true testament to the power of a B-rank adventurer.
Ryu could predict the wide-range attack, but there was no way to avoid it once it was upon him.
Even though Ryu could use a magic barrier to protect himself, he was still unfamiliar with his abilities and didn't think of it in time.
He could have escaped the range of the spell with his speed, but they were in a small training area, offering little space to flee. (He could have broken through a wall to escape, but he didn't think of that either.)
A wall of flame engulfed Ryu. When the flames subsided, Ryu was nowhere to be seen. He had teleported behind Yorm.
Ryu had used his "Teleportation" ability to instantly move behind Yorm. Yorm turned around in a panic, only to have his wrist caught by Ryu. His hand was squeezed tightly, unable to move.
Ryu threw the wooden sword in his other hand aside and grabbed Yorm by the chest.
He flung Yorm into the air, sending him crashing into the training grounds' floor.
Of course, it didn't end there. Yorm's body continued to arc around Ryu, slamming against the floor repeatedly. Ryu made sure to avoid hitting his head, ensuring he wouldn't lose consciousness or die.
Each impact was accompanied by a sickening thud and Yorm's croaking cries, like a frog being crushed.
"Stop... Ugh... It hurts... We... Stop..."
"Enough! Stop!"
Daniel rushed forward, grabbing Ryu's arm.
"... Surrender?"
"Surrender? Yorm is out of energy..."
Daniel gestured toward the battered Yorm.
"No, he hasn't said 'I'm defeated' yet. If I stop now, he might later claim he didn't lose and demand a disqualifying rematch."
Ryu lifted Yorm again. Half-conscious, Yorm struggled to speak.
"I... I... De... Defeated... I... Lose..."
"Did you say something?"
"I... Lose... I... Give Up... Please... Forgive me..."
Yorm, blood streaming from his nose, eyes, and mouth, admitted defeat, even losing control of his bladder.
"You're going too far!"
"This guy was trying to kill me! I'm just fulfilling my promise not to kill him. I'm being merciful."
In a rush, fellow adventurers rushed to Yorm, giving him a potion. His body began to heal, but his broken spirit wouldn't be repaired. His eyes were dull, lifeless.
"So?"
"?"
"Is it okay for me to pass, then?"
Daniel answered reluctantly, "... Yeah, you pass."
Ryu looked around. He locked eyes with Arthur, Bill, and Ban, who had already been given potions and could move. They looked away, scared.
He then turned toward the audience, where the adventurers were all silent, faces pale. They couldn't process what they had just witnessed - Yorm, the strongest adventurer in the city, defeated and crying in defeat, unable to even hold his bladder.
The audience was mostly made up of high-ranking adventurers who had participated in the raid. They knew about the abandonment plan.
These adventurers had left many unskilled adventurers to die in the past.
Ryu's eyes narrowed. Some cowered in fear at his murderous gaze.
Those who had chosen to turn a blind eye were equally guilty. Ryu planned to kill them all eventually.
He was letting them live this time because of the rules, but of course, Yorm and his crew would be killed eventually.
Those who kill must be prepared to be killed.
The destruction of the Mimul city's Adventurer's Guild had begun.
