Chapter 5: The Hope of Generations of the Huo Family

“Whoa!” Su Luo was suddenly hoisted into the air, startled. She quickly wrapped her arms around her daddy’s neck, her eyes wide and round like a startled cat.

“Daddy?”

“Quiet, you’re noisy,” Huo Tingyan said coldly. He weighed the little girl in his arms, feeling how surprisingly light she was, and couldn’t help but furrow his brow.

Why was she so thin? How had her mother been taking care of her?

“Oh.” The little girl obediently responded, then meekly closed her mouth, curling up quietly in his embrace like a kitten.

A faint smile flickered in Huo Tingyan's eyes.

On the top floor, in the VIP ward.

Qin Shu stood at the ward door, peering about, and as soon as she spotted her tall, imposing son in the distance, she quickly scurried back, urging repeatedly, “He’s here! He’s here! Quick, quick, quick! Lie down right away, and remember to make it convincing later.”

“Wife, can we please stop with this charade?” Huo Zhenchuan said, obediently lying down and looking at his wife with a touch of helplessness.

“Do you think this will work? With your son’s sharp eyes, do you really think your little tricks can fool him?”

“Whether it works or not, we’ll only know if we try,” Qin Shu huffed, like a pouting little girl.

Time seemed to have been exceptionally kind to this woman. Although she was already over fifty, there wasn’t a single trace of age on her face. Her skin was smooth and radiant; anyone would believe she was in her thirties.

“What else can we do? Tell me, do you have a better idea? How old is Third Son now? He’s well past the age when he should have settled down, yet he’s still not getting it. All he cares about is the company, company, company. At this rate, he’ll end up marrying the company!”

Qin Shu couldn’t help but sigh whenever this topic came up. It was truly a source of deep anxiety for her.

“He seemed like such a good child when he was little,” she continued, “but who knew he’d become more troublesome the older he got. His two older brothers never gave me this much trouble.”

Qin Shu’s complaints about her son were endless.

Her greatest wish now was to see her youngest son settle down and establish a family soon, and then have a sweet little granddaughter.

There was no other way; it was because the eldest and second sons were such disappointments. They only produced mischievous, troublesome boys, so she could only place her hopes on her youngest son.

Her chances of holding a granddaughter in this lifetime rested entirely on her youngest son!

“These things depend on the child’s own wishes,” Huo Zhenchuan said, looking helplessly at his wife, trying to persuade her. “You can’t force fate.”

“Haven’t you heard the saying, ‘A forced melon isn’t sweet’?” Qin Shu immediately glared at him and smacked him hard. “And you know Third Son’s personality better than anyone.”

“Shut up!” Qin Shu immediately glared at him and smacked him hard.

“Do you still want a granddaughter or not?!”

The mention of this always angered Qin Shu. It was all this man’s fault, for not giving her a sweet, sensible little girl.

It was strange to say, but the Huo family was overwhelmingly male-dominated, as if cursed. For generations, they only had boys. Never a single girl.

This showed just how precious girls were in the eyes of the Huo family.

The Huo family members dreamed of having a delicate, soft, and adorable little princess. But fate was not kind; every time, they produced only worthless, troublesome boys.

Over time, this became an obsession for every member of the Huo family.

While other families favored sons over daughters, only the Huo family favored daughters over sons.

“Alright, alright, I’ll do whatever you say.” Hearing his wife’s words, Huo Zhenchuan immediately conceded and fell silent. He dared not voice a single objection now.

As long as he could hold a granddaughter, anything was fine.

Huo Zhenchuan dreamed of having a cute little granddaughter.

How adorable a soft, sweet granddaughter would be, calling out "Grandpa" and "Grandma" so sweetly.

Unlike those annoying boys at home, who were just mischievous and destructive, and vexed him just by looking at them.

If only they had a granddaughter, it would be different. The Huo family would never have to envy others again.

Every time he saw his teasing friends showing off their granddaughters, Huo Zhenchuan would turn green with envy, wishing he could snatch them up and raise them himself.

He’d go home and give his sons a good dressing-down, grumbling, “It’s all your fault, you good-for-nothing boys! You can’t even produce a cute little granddaughter for me! The hopes of generations of the Huo family are just going to die out like this!”
