Chapter 38: "This Was All It Took"

Akemi hadn't stopped Shuto's violent rampage because she realized it would be pointless to try and interrupt him halfway. She thought it better to let him vent his rage and go wild until he was satisfied, rather than risk interfering. She’d been watching quietly (and averting her gaze, of course).

She'd also been afraid that trying to stop Shuto—who was particularly focused on his revenge against Nakazato, Ushiro, and Itakura—would only result in harm to herself and others.

So, despite her fear and frustration, Akemi chose to silently witness Shuto's brutal revenge, feeling bad for Nakazato and the others.

Fortunately, she sensed that Shuto didn't intend to kill them. If he had, she would have desperately tried to stop him at the last moment.

She seized this lull in the violence to plead with him to stop.

"Please stop… You've clearly gone too far."

Akemi begs Shuto to stop the violence.

"Too far, huh…? Maybe you’re right."

Shuto, prompted by Akemi, looks around the classroom again, focusing on the classmates and delinquents he'd thoroughly broken.

"Um…Four boys: arms and femurs crushed and comminuted, one testicle ruptured, several internal organs damaged, multiple spinal, rib, and sternum fractures and cracks, all fingers and toes complexly fractured. Various other fractures as well.

All fingernails and toenails brutally peeled off, many teeth missing from their mouths, and one eye gouged out, causing blindness.

And… one girl: ruptured uterus, facial skin severely flayed, revealing muscle tissue."

Shuto calmly lists the injuries sustained by the incapacitated Nakazato and others, and Itakura, whose face is covered with a towel. The classmates feel sick hearing the gruesome details; some even vomit. Akemi shudders at Shuto's description.

"Well, that's about it. In this peaceful world, that's definitely excessive.

But anyway…"

Shuto, showing displeasure, directs his gaze to where Itakura is. Akemi and several other classmates are gathered around her, tending to her.

"What…? Why are you worried about that girl who only showed everyone her good side while hiding her rotten nature? She’s a despicable, rotten woman who readily deceived people, toyed with their emotions, and even tried to frame an innocent person…!"

Shuto yells at the classmates gathered around Itakura. They look at him with fear and reproach. Shuto becomes even angrier but takes a deep breath to calm himself before turning back to Akemi.

"Let’s put that aside… Hanamiya, I apologize for interrupting at a convenient moment.

It's not over yet."

"Eh…?"

Just as Akemi is about to ask what he means, Shuto moves to the locker next to the blackboard, yanks it open, and drags out their homeroom teacher, Aono, who pales and lets out a strangled scream.

"This morning during homeroom, I asked, ‘Are you sure this is alright?’ I also said I wouldn't accept a change of heart later, right?"

Shuto threatens Aono, grabbing him by his shirt. Aono shows no trace of his teacherly pride.

"I've repeatedly reported being bullied by Nakazato and the others, and asked for help, but you kept taking their side!"

Shuto throws Aono against a scattered desk. Aono groans in pain from the impact to his head and shoulders.

(Physically hurting him is good, but I also want to socially destroy this trash teacher. I’ll save it for later.)

Ignoring Aono, Shuto looks around the classroom.

"This morning, my gym shoes and locker were badly vandalized. There was crumpled trash, candy wrappers, discarded chewing gum, holes punched in my gym shoes, and insulting graffiti.

Who did this? If I don’t get an answer in ten seconds, I’m destroying everyone. Girls included."

After a few seconds of silence, a classmate points at the unconscious Nakazato and others. Several others follow suit.

"A-and, I think some people from other classes! I think it was Itakura's fans. They believed the rumor…"

"Hmm, I see. It seems true. There's garbage who slandered me in other classes too.

But for now…"

Shuto suddenly moves with blinding speed, grabbing a male student—the one who first pointed at Nakazato.

"Uwaaa…!?"

"You lied, didn't you? That's how I know about your pathetic lies. You’re one of the ones who put trash in my locker this morning, right? Nakazato didn't seem to have touched the locker at all?"

"Wh-why…would you…say that…?"

"That's how I know. With my superpowers (partly true). In any case, you trashy bastard!"

Snap, Crack! "Gyaaaaaaaaaahhhh!"

After breaking his arm, Shuto throws him to the floor. The student faints, his eyes rolling back.

"Sh-Shuto-kun…!"

Akemi tries to stop him, but Shuto ignores her.

"Others who lied…you. And you."

Snap! Crack! Crunch!

Shuto quickly injures and disables several other students who had lied. It turned out they were all involved in defacing Shuto's locker and shoes that morning.

"Even though he was severely bullied by some classmates, this is too much…They could all die…"

Akemi says sadly, but Shuto scoffs.

"No, it's more accurate to say that this is all it took."

"Wha…!?"

Akemi is speechless at Shuto's nonchalant response.

"Think about it. You know this, but I now have the power to easily kill someone.

I hate these pieces of trash so much. If I were even slightly less patient, they would've been dead already."

"Ki-killed…"

Akemi is greatly shaken by Shuto's words. She never expected to be involved in a life-or-death situation, and she struggles to remain calm in the face of the possibility of her classmates dying.

"But I thought it's a bad idea to kill in this (relatively) peaceful world, in this country of Japan, so I restrained myself, stopping just short of death. I’ve been suppressing this urge the entire time, and I haven’t killed any of these scumbags."

Shuto smiles diabolically, glaring at Akemi.

"So? You should be bowing your heads in gratitude! You should be thankful that you were spared thanks to my mercy, you fools!"

Akemi is at a loss for words in the face of Shuto's self-centered, arrogant statement. She's terrified that her once-close friend is saying something she can't even begin to comprehend.

"Shuto-kun, you've become like this…. I…"

Shuto turns to Akemi.

"Hanamiya, you're just waving around your empty sense of justice, aren’t you? You act like a model student, upholding rules, but you didn't try at all to solve the bullying in this class."

"Eh…?"

"You knew about Ushiro and me, yet you didn't confront Nakazato, just looking away and pretending you didn't see anything, along with the other classmates."

"Th-that's…"

"You're strict about clothing, appearance, and belongings. You always reprimand those who are late. You take your studies and school events seriously. Yet, you turn a blind eye to bullying and violence.

Then you try your hardest to stop my actions?"

"…!"

"What is it? You overlook what these scumbags did and only condemn me? Do you pick and choose who you criticize? You don’t oppose these high-ranking people but criticize me, who's at the bottom?

What is this, your half-baked sense of justice!?"

"… U-ugh…"

Akemi can't say anything. She didn't act against Nakazato's bullying because he has leverage over her.

Nakazato has been threatening her: if she interferes or reports him to the teachers, he’ll get her father fired from his company.

Nakazato's father is the chairman of a large corporation, and Akemi's father works for one of its subsidiaries. The chairman’s word could easily get Akemi’s father demoted or laid off, potentially leaving her family destitute.

That's why Akemi can’t stand up to Nakazato. Of course, she hasn't told anyone, including Shuto.

"I'm sorry, that…"

"It can't be helped, Hanamiya. You're weak."

Shuto changes from accusatory to sympathetic.

“‘Weakness is a sin.’ You often hear that in anime and manga, and I think it’s not entirely wrong in reality."

He sits heavily on the desk and continues.

"Without power, like me before, you're just trampled and bullied. That bitch said, ‘The person who can’t solve their own problems is at fault,’ and she's not wrong. You should have dealt with the harm yourself. If you lacked the strength, then you should have become stronger. Like me now."

Shuto smashes his fist down onto the desk next to him, destroying it. Everyone flinches.

"So, I don't have any particular resentment or anger towards Hanamiya anymore. You did worry about me while I was being bullied. Though I think that was only because of your role as a student council member.

But it's different for almost everyone else. You watched me get bullied and laughed. You pretended not to notice and protected Nakazato and the others. To be honest, I want to mess all of you up, though not as badly as Nakazato."

Shuto’s light tone belies a terrifying content. The classmates start to panic again, fearing that they're next.

"Shuto-kun! I know I'm not in a position to say this. But I have to ask you, please don't hurt anyone else!"

Akemi stands in front of Shuto, pleading with him. Shuto laughs, surveying the injured classmates.

"If these guys…had accepted my pleas to stop and genuinely reformed, I wouldn't have become a pathetic victim, and they wouldn't have suffered such a terrible fate.

They were focused on pointless and unfair violence and bullying, so this is what happened. The same is true for you and that useless teacher. If you hadn’t ignored it, this wouldn’t have happened.

You all sowed the seeds."

Akemi and the other classmates can’t respond. They can only remain silent, their faces pale, admitting that Shuto’s claim is entirely correct.

Just as Shuto gets up to decide who to attack next, the pile of earth blocking both classroom doors suddenly disappears.

Simultaneously, the sliding doors burst open, and several teachers rush in.

  • This concludes the revenge within the school and classroom.
