Ever since parting ways with Snow, Koai had spent most of her days holed up in the Taras Castle manor, sleeping away the hours.

Day or night, it made no difference. She would curl up on the bed, replaying in her mind the single night she’d shared with Snow. And sometimes, as if suddenly remembering, she would take out the stiff card Snow had given her, gazing at the drawing on it until her cheeks softened into a quiet smile.

Of course, she never let herself grow completely lax—should word of an enemy attack arrive, she was ready to respond immediately.

Her two closest attendants, the elderly Sodie and the young Luka, remained in the manor tending to their respective duties.

For the first two days, they did little more than stop by her door to ask if she needed meals.

It wasn’t until the morning of the third day that a proper conversation took place.

“Your Majesty, may I come in?”

The slightly hoarse voice belonged to Sodie. Perhaps two days of near-total seclusion had worried him enough to seek an audience.

“Enter.”

Koai sat up and welcomed the old man inside.
